Home Accessories – Protect Your LCD Or Plasma TV From Damage

Gaming consoles are standard in most homes these days. The fact is that children, and some adults too, absolutely love them. So much, in fact, that most would rather play them than play outside. Fun as they are though, they put your expensive TV at risk of getting damaged. Every year, thousands and thousands of expensive TVs are damaged as a result of children throwing, whether by accident or through anger, console controllers at TV screens. The scratches and cracks that occur are at best unsightly and annoying, and at worst render the TV unusable. Fixing a damaged TV screen is not as easy as replacing an internal circuit board inside the television. A cracked TV screen needs to be totally replaced. The cost for this is often as much as buying a whole new television. Some rich people can buy a new TV as when they want one but, for most of us, losing that much money is difficult, even tragic. The warranty you get from a retailer for your new TV, in most cases, does not cover accidental screen contact. Therefore, if you knock it by accident, or a child throws something at it, and the screen gets a crack or a scratch, the damage will be irreparable 90%+ of the time.

When I my children are playing on the console I notice they get very competitive and start moving closer to the screen. So, what I do is put an obstacle in their way which I tell them that they are not allowed to pass. If they do they know I will ban them from using the console for a week or two. This works very well, but it is not the best option. There is a solution though, which is to use a TV screen protector. These deceptively simple pieces of equipment, which are very cheap in comparison to the cost of repairing, or even replacing a TV, are there to take the damage, whilst the TV screen behind them remains untouched. A properly designed TV screen protector will be thick enough, 6MM or roughly 1/4″ of an inch. It should be held off the TV a distance to allow it to flex, 1/4″ or so. It also should be held securely onto the TV.

An ideal solution is a lip on the top of the TV screen protector that allows the TV to carry the weight of the TV screen protector and straps going around it to secure it on the TV. Occasional cleaning of a TV screen protector will be necessary, but will be needed less often than you are currently having to wipe down your TV screen now. They are also much easier to clean, as you do not have to worry about what you spray on them or how hard you wipe. The good news is that your picture quality won’t suffer at all as a result of using a TV screen protector. Unless you have your lights positioned oddly, there won’t be even the slightest glare showing up on the screen. The TV screen protector itself is optically clear and will not distort the image. After a while many people even forget that the screen protector is even on the TV.

Furniture Designers Like Kaare Klint Makes Perfect Furniture Design

Of all the furniture designers that emerged from Denmark during the 20th century, Kaare Klint was the only one that was born the century before. Born in 1888, the son of P.V. Jensen Klint, an eminent architect of the early 20th century, the younger Kaare Klint worked first as an architect before moving on to furniture design. In 1924 he founded the Danish Academy of Art and became the first professor the school ever had in furniture. He was also the first lecturer in Furniture Design at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

As a professor and lecturer, Kaare Klint had a huge hand in shaping many of the most well known furniture designers to come out of Denmark. He was a mentor and collaborator of Finn Juhl, whose own style was completely opposite of Kaare Klint with the exception of Shaker furniture, which both men admired greatly. Instead of embracing the modernism movement like many of his contemporaries out of France and Germany, Kaare Klint went back to the simple and elegant designs that had worked for generations. He found inspiration in Chippendale, Biedermeier, Far Eastern style, and, of course, American Shaker. His furniture, designed in the classic style but with proportion studies thrown in, fit in the everyday lives of both Danish and international homes. Read the rest of this entry »

The Wide Appeal of Equestrian Home Decor

Equestrian home decor gives horse lovers a chance to show their love and appreciation for their four-legged friends. There are all kinds of home furnishings, accessories, and accents that feature a horse of some sort. It might be a table lamp with a horse sculpture on the base, a comforter that depicts horses running across a meadow, or a piece of wall art with a horse theme.

There are many reasons for the wide appeal of equestrian home decor. First, many people simply admire the form and beauty of the animal. Also, a horse might be reminiscent of time spent on a grandparent’s farm or a summer camp where you learned to ride.

You might have seen examples of equestrian home decor in all sorts of homes, but the horse-themed decor that we’re most fond of is found in homes with one of the casual styles of home decorating, such as western, rustic, southwestern, or country. Some people might be surprised to know that an increasingly large percentage of horse-themed decor is in homes of people that do not own horses. Read the rest of this entry »

Finding A Home For The Home Office

“Wouldn’t it be great to work from home!” That is a dream for many people who have to commute every day. However for those who have managed to create a home office situation, often over time that thought of how great it would be to work at home instead becomes, “Help! I can’t work because…
…I can’t concentrate.
…I’m not comfortable.
…I don’t have any storage room.
…I don’t know what systems I need.

Home offices have their unique set of challenges. They often start with a vision but not much concrete planning because you did not anticipate at the beginning how quickly you might grow and how rapidly things could accumulate.

I have worked with many home office situations. Some of them have their own rooms and some share just a corner of that room. The toughest one was an attorney who had recently had a baby and was working most of the time from home at that point. She had her desk inside her clothes closet, which had louvered doors. She faced the wall. Above and on both sides of her were hanging outfits, plus piles of shoes, etc., on the floor. That one embodied all four of the following points to deal with in getting started or in reevaluating your current situation. Read the rest of this entry »

Home Accessories : Why a Futon is a Great Piece of Furniture

From a land known these days for its advancements in modern day technology, there also hails an ancient convenience known for giving one a restful nights sleep. What some may loosely refer to as a one dimensional mattress is a very well designed piece of bedding known as a futon – which in Japanese means bedding. Let’s first look at the origins of this great piece of furniture. In the past, ordinary people in Japan slept on straw mats. While the peasants slept with a rudimentary covering (if any at all), theaffluentwere able to coverthemselveswith more clothing. This eventually led to the making of bedclothes and futons for a more comfortable night’s sleep. That was about 300 years ago, but it is only in the last decade or so that people in the Western world have started using them too.

Typically, a futon set consists of a padded mattress, a quilt and, of course, a pillow. A cover is often included too, but not always. The mattress is placed inside the cover which greatly aids in keeping the entire bedding clean and fresh. The pillow, while not stuffed with feathers or cotton or some other material, is filled with old standby beans and / or buckwheat chaff.Do not let that put you off though! While this type of pillow may not to be a style that everyone likes, because of its firmness and rigidity, it has had its converts. The mattress itself is usually stuffed with cotton or synthetic batting. You may occasionally come across one filled with wool, but they are fairly rare these days. Typically, a mattress is three to five inches in thickness and is designed to be spread out flat on the floor. As people usually perspire during sleep, the futon has been designed to absorb moisture. Surprisingly, you can have a very peaceful sleep, stay warm, and feel a kind of support that you would not get from a traditional bed. Read the rest of this entry »

Home Decor – Give a Unique New Look to your Home

A good home decoration can give an entirely new look to one’s home. These days, people often employ professional home decorators to give that unique look to the interiors of their homes. Let us have a look at some of the intricacies of this emerging field.

Interior decoration is the art of decorating a room so that it becomes attractive and functions well within the existing architecture of the house. Although, the terms home decor and interior designing are often used interchangeably, they in fact show a distinct difference in their scopes. Home decor typically focuses on the appropriate selection and presentation of the house’s interior items like furniture, accessories and room layout. On the other hand, interior designing involves the manipulation of the architectural integrity of the interior space of a house.

The first professional interior decorators were probably employed in Western Europe during 1720s. William Kent is often cited as the first person who took charge of the interior decoration of an entire building. In London, the work of home decorators was earlier done by the upholsterers while the same job was done by merchand-mercier or “Merchant of Goods” in Paris during early nineteenth century. Brilliant Furniture Design by Furniture Designers Like Finn Juhl

“One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects, but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.” – Finn Juhl

Frederiksberg, Denmark witnessed the birth of furniture designer Finn Juhl on January 20, 1912. The son of textile wholesaler, Finn Juhl enjoyed the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and could be found there quite often. He wanted to be an art historian, but his father’s practical thinking prodded him into attending the Royal Academy of Arts instead. Often looked upon as a very quiet man, Finn Juhl earned himself an architect degree which he later used to design interiors such as those found in the chambers of the UN in New York City. His furniture designs, especially his chairs, are what he is truly remembered for and secured his place in modernism design.

Finn Juhl worked in the offices of architect Vilhelm Laritzen for 11 years, learning what it was like to be an architect and giving him the experience he needed later down the road. He won an award for designing his own home in 1942 and while working for Laritzen, Finn Juhl had the opportunity to also work with Viggo Boesen on the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio Building. Finn Juhl is not credited for designing this building, but every aspect of design – especially the interior – was heightened in the building, leaving his mark on it for evermore. He left Laritzen’s firm to open his own in 1945, turning his attention on interior design and furniture. He had been exhibiting his own designs prior to leaving the architect firm, including one in conjunction with cabinetmaker Niels Vodder that was displayed at the 11th Annual Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild.
